Maison de Jean-Baptiste Mâsse 1809

This painting is the first in a series covering the 19 sites of the heritage circuit of Saint-Denis sur Richelieu.

It represents the Maison nationale des patriotes located at 670 Chemin des patriotes, Saint-Denis sur Richelieu.

It was in 1809 that Mr. Jean-Baptiste Mâsse, an innkeeper and Patriote sympathizer, replaced his wooden house with a large fieldstone house.

Property of SODEC, classified as a historic monument in 1977, the maison Mâsse presents several architectural features that make it an exceptional dwelling: an interior well, an icehouse, six fireplaces and a highly atypical rectangular trapezoid floor plan. The maison Mâsse is an essential heritage and historic site.

A museum on the History of the Patriotes in Bas-Canada, its main mission is to help you discover an important part of your history: the history of the Patriotes in Bas-Canada in 1837 and 1838.

Drawing on elements of historical reconstruction and numerous collection objects, the permanent exhibition immerses you in the very heart of the Patriotes’ uprisings in all their complexity.
