Demeure Gaétan Sylvestre

Victorian-style house built for judge Louis Tellier between 1889 and 1904, purchased around 1936 by the wife of lawyer Gaétan Sylvestre, who practiced in Saint-Hyacinthe from 1928 to 1958 and became a judge of the Superior Court from 1958 to 1959.

The east side of this stately residence was also inhabited by the family of Ernest-Joseph Chartier, then owner of the weekly Le Courrier de Saint-Hyacinthe.

Mr. Ernest Chartier, born February 24, 1892 in Saint-Damase, died September 22, 1954 in Saint-Hyacinthe. He was a graduate of the Collège Sacré-Coeur de Saint-Hyacinthe and was married to Marie-Anne Duhamel. He was a businessman who was also a director of La Survivance, a life insurance company.

He was a member of parliament for Saint-Hyacinthe for the Union Nationale from 1944 to 1954, while the Premier was Maurice Duplessis. His predecessor was Télesphore-Damien Bouchard and his successor was Jacques Bousquet.
